Ken Yelton Eagle Scout Scholarship
The Central North Carolina Council, Scouting America is proud to announce the new Ken Yelton Eagle Scout Scholarship.
About Ken Yelton
Ken was born in Concord on November 10, 1959. He was the son of Clarence Eugene and Ola Janelle Yelton. He was an Eagle Scout, a graduate of Concord High School where he played basketball for the Concord Spiders and played the saxophone in the jazz band. Ken was a proud 1983 graduate of Wingate University where he majored in Business Administration. He served the university in many ways as an alumni including serving on the Board of Trustees, the Board of Visitors and the Alumni Board.
He retired in December of 2024 as Market President of Uwharrie Bank. He enjoyed a 42 year career in banking where his friends became customers and his customers became friends.
Ken was a highly regarded community leader having served as chairman of the Cabarrus Chamber of Commerce, United Way board chairman and 1993 Campaign chair. He served on boards for many other civic and community organizations over his long career. He was a devoted member of Central United Methodist Church and was especially active in the choir which held a special place in his heart.
Ken’s biggest passion in life and his source of tremendous pride and joy was his family. Ken enjoyed traveling with his wife Tiffany, countless trips to Sullivan’s Island, family RV trips and quiet weekends watching the sunset on Lake Tillery. Ken will be greatly missed by his family. They will cherish his loving nature, his kindness, generosity, unwavering support and unconditional love.
The Ken Yelton Eagle Scout Scholarship Overview:
1. Scholarship Eligibility - Applicants must meet all the following criteria to be eligible:
A. Application - Submit a completed application, including high school and college transcripts (if applicable), and a
description of their Eagle Scout Project.
B. Scouting- Earned Eagle Scout Award from a CCNC county.
C. Class of Eligible Students - High school seniors and students currently enrolled in undergraduate programs in
post-secondary education.
D. Institution of Attendance - Any regionally accredited college or university in the United States.
E. Academic Program - Any undergraduate academic program at a two-year or four-year institution. Scholarships
are not available for students pursuing a master's or doctoral degree.
2. Selection Criteria - The Scholarship Committee will use the following criteria to select scholarship recipients.
A. Eagle Scout Project - The strength of the Eagle Scout project.
B. Academic Merit - Minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 for high school seniors and a minimum college
GPA of 2.5 for students currently enrolled in higher education.
C. Enrollment - Students must be enrolled at least half time (6-8) hours per semester.
D. Financial Need - Financial need may also be considered as a selection criterion.
E. Other - The committee may include additional criteria from time to time.
3. Award Amount and Number
A. Award amount per scholarship - $1,000.
B. Number of scholarships awarded each year - As many $1,000 awards as can be supported.
4. Renewal Criteria - Scholarships are non-renewable. However, successful recipients may reapply in subsequent years of undergraduate study.
